When to use GRP pipes

In most of the cases the choice of the pipe material is based on a compromise between the initial cost and the durability of the system. The initial cost includes the price of the pipes and fittings plus the cost of installation. The durability depends on the corrosion resistance and long term strength of the material.

The aim of establishing Al Shamal pipes Co. is the production of GRP pipes(Glass Reinforced Plastic) of resin as well as Poly Ethylene pipes of different diameters which will enable Syrian to avoid importation of such products which are all used for irrigation water, transport potable water systems, drainage, sewage, petrol and gas…ext. Pipes, manufactured from GRP resin by the filament winding method, are of very high specifications of both, mechanical aspect (withstanding pressure and also elasticity), physical and chemical aspects (withstanding materials containing acids, or alkaline , or salts, or sulfates) when used in sanitary drainage or petrol and gas.

The internal surfaces of these pipes are of high smoothness which will make the loss of hydraulic pressure of the transported fluids very little and in the minimum limits.
Al Shamal pipes are also of a very long life – more than 50 years- with nearly the same characteristics as the original studies and storage tests and the curves taken from these show that the pipes shall keep the most part of their characteristics after a hundred years, which means that these pipes are of a long life.

The production lines of all these pipes work according to a complete computerized program of high technology with which faults are rare or even non-existed.The long term behavior of the material can be tested with reliable methods and proven design codes exist.

The intrinsic corrosion resistance of GRP assures a long, maintenance free, operational life, and the material can be used for high pressure piping because of its high mechanical properties.

The inner surface of GRP pipes is very smooth so the head losses are low and remain low in time.

GRP is light in weight so the pipes are supplied in long lengths making the installation faster and reducing the number of joints.

The bell and spigot joints with O-Ring gaskets and testing nipple make the installation easy, fast and reliable. The locking key eliminates the need for anchor blocks.

In order to take the maximum advantage from the properties of GRP the design engineers must provide precise specifications to the pipe manufacturers and to the contractors.
